Hyrum Carmack
Hyrum is excited to be a director at AWSP, where he spent five years as a student from 2009 to 2014. His student experience included acting such parts as the tragical Hamlet (Hamlet); the maniacal Edgar, the frolicking Fool, and the traitorous Duke of Cornwall (King Lear); the fearsome Hotspur (King Henry IV, Part 1); the flamboyant Prince of Morocco and the worthy Basanio (Merchant of Venice); the cunning Iachimo, the rotten Cloton, and the brave Arviragus (Cymbeline). His AWSP experience also included learning valuable skills as a stage manager, set crew member, and lights manager—skills that he continues to use in college. Hyrum grew up the youngest of six homeschooled children—four brothers and one sister, whom he continues to call his best friends. With the adoption of a seventh child into the family, he is now a big brother as well—a role he enjoys. He loves the outdoors and exploring nature, especially the forest. As a teenager, he took four years of private violin instruction and participated in a classical dance camp at Brigham Young University. He is sensitive and appreciative of the personal and cultural diversity that he finds all around him. Hyrum’s passion for singing led him to major in Vocal Performance and minor in Music Education at BYU Idaho, where he expects to complete an Associate of Performing Arts degree this fall. His college experience included a leading role in The Shoemaker’s Holiday (a Shakespearean-era play), where he also served on the set and stage crews (2014); in the Verdi opera Aida, he sang in the chorus and worked on the set crew (2017); in Mozart’s opera Die Entführung aus dem Seraile, he was assistant director and played a major acting and singing role (2018). He also took private vocal instruction from David Olsen, Director of BYU Idaho Vocal Studies, and from Kristine Ciesinski, a former international opera singer. As a senior energy consultant and sales team manager at Greenmind Energy (2017), Hyrum gained valuable experience in leading, training, and motivating others. He has also developed interpersonal skills and persistence while working various sales and service jobs on the side of his university studies. Hyrum is passionate about homeschooling, about teaching vocal and dramatic skills to youth, about perfecting his own talents and abilities as a performing artist, and about helping and inspiring his younger friends to do the same. |
